Match Report
After a stunning 5-0 victory at Leigh RMI in the last round back in November, FC United’s women were pitched against high flying Bolton Wanderers at the Trotter’s training academy not far from the shadow of the Macron Stadium on Sunday. The 3-0 defeat is not an accurate reflection of the overall game and the Reds were by no means disgraced. Lee Sutton’s side will have learnt from the experience and have a good idea of the standard in the league above should they progress at some future point.

In freezing conditions, the exposed Championship facility offered little protection from a biting wind that persisted throughout with some sleety rain thrown in for good measure in the closing stages as 50-plus hardy spectators gathered pitch side; warmed and sustained by Marlene’s supply of tea and coffee, for the 2nd Round Argyle Cup clash.

Kicking into the strong wind, FC United got the game underway and both teams shared an even opening as Bolton, using the wind, forced United’s keeper Chloe Williams to sweep clear a couple of long balls over the top. The second clearance sparked United’s first attack with Lucy Bonner and Leah Hartshorne combining well down the left feeding Kirsty Chambers whose deep cross to the far post was just too long for Charlie Evans to capitalise upon.

On seven minutes, after a persistent spell of Wanderers’ possession, FC managed to counter down the left through Chambers but having little option in the middle, the captain was forced into shooting; her speculative effort clearing Brittany Jackson’s bar by some distance.

Bolton, once again picked up the momentum and a ball swung in from the right caused chaos in the FC area and hesitation in defence was pounced upon by Jodie Corless who side footed home from six yards to open the scoring on 10 minutes.

The home side had the initiative with United working hard and looking to counter but sitting progressively deeper, inviting pressure. Cutting in from the inside left channel, Emma Schofield shrugged off the attentions of Jess McCarrick and Charlie Evans forcing her way into the area but toe-poked her shot under pressure straight into the grateful arms of Williams. However, three minutes later just after the midway point of the first half, Bolton doubled their lead through Michelle Kirkman-Ryan. The number nine latched onto a superb pass from Safron Newhouse and clipped the ball past the on-rushing Williams and into the bottom corner.

United restricted Bolton to a Hayley Langford 35th minute free kick that deflected off the wall but straight into the body and arms of Williams and three minutes later, in a positive move and a bid to get back into the game before half time, the United bench switched Jess Tonge for Shellby Wolstencroft. As half time approached, the tricky striker launched an attack feeding through a delightful ball to Bonner whose shot from 12 yards forced Jackson into a good save which was cleared behind by a covering defender for a corner.

Chambers’ corner found the head of Wolstencroft as she darted to the front post and her glancing effort was well held by Jackson and thus ended the half and FC’s best spell of it.

Clearly, FC needed to get back into the tie and started the second half in a promising manner with Wolstencroft producing a skilful back heeled through ball in midfield that Bonner raced onto but Jackson was quickly out to clear the danger.

The game was becoming entrenched with Bolton happy to soak up any FC pressure whilst not committing forward too often and play was increasingly compressed in the centre of the pitch. The play, not helped by the conditions, became scrappy which played into the host’s hands and United struggled to make any in-roads.

As the half looked to end in a goalless stalemate Langford drove in a speculative 20 yard effort which swirled in the strong breeze in front of Williams who was forced to parry the effort away. Bolton forward, Emma Schofield, reacted fastest pouncing on the loose ball to fire past Williams from close range in the 85th minute putting the tie beyond all doubt as the icy rain began to fall.

In stoppage time Williams picked up a knock and required lengthy treatment and after consulting with the both benches, referee Paul Baulcombe called time on the game.

Now competing on two out of three fronts, the Reds are away to Liverpool Marshall Feds Reserves in the league on Valentine’s Day before visiting old foes, Middleton Athletic in The Manchester FA Cup on 21st February. Get yourself to those football grounds.
